Theology 101 Pt9

Speaker: Barry Teague

Series: Theology 101

THEORIES OF INSPIRATION

1. Concept
2. Partial
3. Neo-Orthodox 4. Natural
5. Dictation
6. Verbal Plenary

KEY PASSAGE: 2 TIM 3:16

Translations:
“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable....” “Every Scripture inspired of God is profitable....”

Interpretation:
All Scripture inspired by God is (also) profitable.... All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable....

ANALYSIS

“inspired” - theopneustos - out-breathed by God the Sacred writings

PROOF INDUCTIVELY

Mt 4:4 But He answered and said,“It is written,‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.’”

Jn 10:35 ...and the Scripture cannot be broken
Mt 22:43 He said to them, “Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’

Mt 22:32 ‘I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM,AND THE GOD OF ISAAC,AND THE GOD OF JACOB’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”

Gal 3:16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one,“And to your seed,” that is, Christ.

Mt 5:18 “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

Extent: All Scripture Means: God breathed Purpose: Profitable for....

2Pet. 1:19 So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.

2Pet. 1:20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation,
2Pet. 1:21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Acts 27:15 and when the ship was caught in it and could not face the wind, we gave way to it and let ourselves be driven along. Acts 27:16 Running under the shelter of a small island called Clauda, we were scarcely able to get the ship’s boat under control.
Acts 27:17 After they had hoisted it up, they used supporting cables in undergirding the ship; and fearing that they might run aground on the shallows of Syrtis, they let down the sea anchor and in this way let themselves be driven along.

DUAL AUTHORSHIP

1. The Bible is truly the out breathing of God
2. The Bible is truly the production of men
3. This twofold authorship extends to every part of Scripture

Rom. 9:1 I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit,
Rom. 9:2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart.

Rom. 9:3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh
!
Luke 1:1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us,
Luke 1:2 just as they were handed down to us by those who
from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, Luke 1:3 it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus;
Luke 1:4 so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.
!
2Cor 9:15 Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

THE MYSTERY OF DUAL AUTHORSHIP

1. The human authors of Scripture were not mere secretaries taking dictation

2. What they wrote is what they desired to write in the style that they were accustomed to using

3. God engaged in a divine concurrence between their words and His.

DEFINITION

Basic: God carried men along so that they wrote His message in the Bible.

Amplified: God superintended the human authors of the Bible so that they composed and recorded without error His message to mankind in the words of their original writings.

IMPLICATIONS: INSPIRATION DOES NOT...

1. teach that all parts of the Bible are equally important but that both are equally inspiredE

A. Judges 3:16 Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length, and he bound it on his right thigh under his cloak.

B. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

2. guarantee the inspiration of any translation but deals with the original autographs

3. allow for any false teaching, but it does on occasion record the lie of someone (truthfully)

4. permit any historical, geographical, scientific, or prophetical error whatsoever while not being a textbook on history....

5. prohibit personal research (Lk 1:1-4)

IMPLICATIONS: INSPIRATION DOES NOT...

6. Deny the use of extra biblical sources

A. Tit 1:12 One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said,“Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”

B. Jude 14 It was also about these men that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying,“Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones,

7. overwhelm the personality of the human authors
8. exclude the use of pictorial, symbolic or hyperbolic language

A. Ps 91:4 He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.

B. 1Cor 13:2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

IMPLICATIONS: INSPIRATION DOES NOT...

9. Mean uniformity in all details given in describing the same event: A. Mt 27:37 - “This is Jesus the King of the Jews”
B. Mk 15:26 - “The King of the Jews”
C. Lk 23:38 - “This is the King of the Jews”

D. Jn 19:19 - “Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews”

E. “This is Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews”

10. Mean that God has told us everything, only everything necessary for us to know regarding the broad umbrella of salvation.

INSPIRATION - TODAY?

Gal 1:6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel;

Jude 3 Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints. Rev. 22:18

Rev 22:18-21 I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book. He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming quickly.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.

END RESULT

Bible is of Divine Authority
Bible’s Divine Authority is final
Bible’s Divine Authority is located in the autographic text

WHY NOT PRESERVE THE ORIGINALS?

1. God has revealed to us the fetish nature of His people

A. Num 21:8,9 Then the LORD said to Moses,“Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a standard; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, he will live.” And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.

B. 2Kings 18:4 He removed the high places and broke down the sacred pillars and cut down the Asherah. He also broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until those days the sons of Israel burned incense to it; and it was called Nehushtan.

2. How much would it impede the expansion of the Gospel?
