Truths That Transform Lives

The Study of God: Attributes Names Trinity

THEOLOGY PROPER

The Study of God

EXERCISE:

NAME SOMETHING ABOUT GOD THAT ENCOURAGES / BLESSES / INSPIRES / HELPS YOU

ATTRIBUTES

Can God be defined?
No - if seeking to express the essential nature Yes - if seeking to describe

The list do not describe component parts of God but His total being

God is more than the sum total of His perfections!

NOTHING MORE IMPORTANT

All basic theological truth depends upon God’s attributes

We cannot recognize false “Gods” without knowing the True God

Error has practical consequences
Our spiritual growth is dependent upon our concept of God

METAPHYSICAL AND METAPHORICAL

Metaphysical attribution is based on the way God actually is - an intrinsic relation

Metaphorical attribution is not based of the way God actually is - an external relation

WHY METAPHORICAL?

inform us of what God can do are often evocative

Deut 33:27 “underneath are the everlasting arms”

Jer 49:19 “Who is like me and who can challenge me? And what shepherd can stand against me?”

Heb 4:13 “Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

KINDS OF METAPHORICAL DESCRIPTIONS

Anthropomorphisms Anthropopathisms Anthropoieses

WHY SO MANY ATTRIBUTES NEGATIVE?

e.g.: infinite - immutable - indivisible - necessary - aseity

via negativa: assure that all finitude is negated of an attribute before it is predicated of God

WAYSTO CATEGORIZE

nonmoral and moral
absolute and relative incommunicable and communicable

ETERNITY

God exists endlessly
Ps 90:2 “from everlasting to everlasting” Gen 21:33 “the everlasting God

Applic: His sustaining, providential control of all things and events is assured

Gen. 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Col. 1:17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

Ex. 3:14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
John 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

John 1:3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
Col. 1:16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things have been created through Him and for Him.

FREEDOM

He is independent of His creatures and His creation

Isa 40:13,14 Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, or as His counselor has informed Him? With whom did He consult and who gave Him understanding? And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge and informed Him of the way of understanding?

ls God restricted in any way? Applic: He will never be our debtor

HOLINESS

not only separate from all that is unclean and evil but also that He is positively pure!

Isa 6:2,3 Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and withtwohecoveredhisfeet, andwithtwoheflew. Andonecalledouttoanotherandsaid, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory.”

Rev 4:8 And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night they do not cease to say, “HOLY, HOLY, HOLY is THE LORD GOD, THE ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS AND WHO IS AND WHO IS TO COME.”

Applic:
Sinners must be separate from Him unless a holy way can be found to make them holy! Holiness becomes the standard for the believer’s life

OBJECTIONS

Obj: God cannot be both loving and holy at the same time.

Ans: God’s love can be expressed even toward those who reject it

APPLICATION

Rom 3:24-26 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

2Cor 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

1Jn 1:7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

IMMUTABILITY

God is unchangeable and thus unchanging

Mal 3:6 “For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.

Jam 1:17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

OBJECTIONS

Obj: If God is immutable, how can it be said that He repents?

Gen 6:6 The LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.

Jonah 3:10 When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it.

Ans: Anthropomorphism

APPLICATION

Mal 3:6 “For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.

2Tim 2:13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

INFINITY

He has no bounds or limits

I Kgs 8:27 “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built!

Acts 17:24-28 “The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; and aHe made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we also are His children.’

Job 11:7-9 “Can you discover the depths of God? Can you discover the limits of the Almighty? “They are high as the heavens, what can you do? Deeper than Sheol, what can you know? “Its measure is longer than the earth and broader than the sea.”

OBJECTIONS

Obj: If God is infinite, there could be nothing else.

Ans: Finite creatures are not more than God; they are simply other than God.

APPLICATION

Ps8:1 OLORD,ourLord, howmajesticisYournameinallthe earth, who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens!

Rev 4:11 “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”

LOVE

That which seeks the highest good!

1Jn 4:8 “God is love.”

goodness / mercy / long-suffering / grace

Acts 14:17 and yet He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good and gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons,...

Eph 2:4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,

2Pet 3:15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you,

Rom 3:24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;

OBJECTION: GOD ONLY LOVES

THE ELECT

Eph 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world,

1Cor 15:3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

Jn 10:15 even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.

Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,

Eph 1:11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose....

Gal 1:3,4 ...and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,

Tit 2:14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.

IPet 3:18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the 1spirit;

ANSWER

1. Refers to whom it has been “applied” and not merely “provided” 2. doesn’t mean that He doesn’t love the whole world
3. Scripture to the contrary

1. Jn 3:16
2. 2Cor 5:14 “one (Christ) died for all”
3. Heb 2:9 “tasted death for everyone”
4. 1Tim 2:4 “gave himself as a ransom for all”
5. 1Jn 2:2 “not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.”
6. 2Pet 2:1 “there were also false prophets... even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them.” 7. 2Pet 3:9 “Not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

4. NT doesn’t say: “Christ died ONLY for the elect.”

OBJECTION: GOD CHOSE NOT TO LOVE ESAU

Rom9:13 Justasitiswritten,“JACOBILOVED,BUTESAUI HATED.”

Rom 9:15 For He says to Moses,“IWILL HAVE MERCY ON WHOM I HAVE MERCY,AND IWILL HAVE COMPASSION ON WHOM I HAVE COMPASSION.”

Rom 9:22 What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction?

ANSWER

  1. This passage refers to nations

  2. national election was temporal

  3. “hate” doesn’t mean not to love at all or not to will the good of the person

  4. Pharaoh hardened his heart against God before God hardened it

  5. the “vessels of wrath” were not destined to destruction against their will

  6. to suggest “limited love” goes against God’s universal saving love for all taught throughout the Scriptures

OMNIPOTENCE

God as all powerful and able to do anything!

Gen 17:1 Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless.

Ps 115:3 But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.

2Cor 6:18 “And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” says the Lord Almighty.

LIMITATIONS?

Tit 1:2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago,

Heb 6:18 so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.

Jam 1:13 Let no one say when he is tempted,“I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.

2Tim 2:13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

OBJECTION / ANSWER

Obj: God’s omnipotence is deficient. Cannot make 2 + 2 = 6. Ans:

1) question for math not power
2) God can never make wrong right

RAMIFICATIONS

2Cor 13:4 For indeed He was crucified because of weakness, yet He lives because of the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, yet we will live with Him because of the power of God directed toward you.

Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

1Pet 1:5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for ca salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

1Cor 6:14 Now God has not only raised the Lord, but will also raise us up through His power.

Eph 1:19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might

Col 1:29 For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me.

OMNIPRESENCE

God is everywhere present

Ps139:7-12 WherecanIgofromYourSpirit?OrwherecanI flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven,You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, behold,You are there. If I take the wings of the dawn, if I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, even there Your hand will lead me, andYour right hand will lay hold of me. If I say,“Surely the darkness will 1overwhelm me, and the light around me will be night,” even the darkness is not dark to You, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You.

OBJECTION / ANSWER

Obj: Then why ask Him to be with us?

Ans: Omnipresence does not mean that the immediacy of His presence does not vary.

Rev 4:2 ...behold, a throne was standing in heaven, and One sitting on the throne.

2Chr 7:2 The priests could not enter into the house of the LORD because the glory of the LORD filled the LORD’S house.

Gal 2:20 “... and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me;...”

Rev 14:10 ...and he will be tormented... in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.

2Thess 1:9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,

OBJECTION / ANSWER

Obj: Omnipresence does not differ from pantheism Ans: Universe is not God!

RAMIFICATIONS

1. No person can escape the presence of God - ever!
2. Believer should always be seeking His presence in a special way!

OMNISCIENCE

God knows everything, things actual and possible, effortlessly and equally well!

Acts15:18 SAYSTHELORD,WHOMAKESTHESETHINGSKNOWNFROMLONG AGO.

Ps 147:4,5 He counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them. Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite.

Mt 11:21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the 1miracles had occurred in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

Ps 139:16 Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them.

Heb 4:13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

OBJECTION / ANWER

Obj:
1. Free acts are those that could have been otherwise.
2.God’s infallible knowledge of events means they cannot be otherwise. 3.Hence, infallible knowledge of free acts is impossible.

Ans: No contradiction in claiming:
1. a future free act is determined from the relation of God’s infallibility 2. yet also free when viewed from the relationship of our free choice

Law of noncontradiction: to be contradictory, two propositions must affirm and deny the same thing in the same sense and in the same relationship.

APPLICATION

sensitivity. Col 3:2,3 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

security.

Rev 12:10 ...for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night.

1Jn 2:2 we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous

solace. Ps 29:10 The LORD sat as King at the flood; yes, the LORD sits as King forever.
